Romare Bearden was born in North Carolina and grew up in New York City. During the summers he spent time in Pittsburg as well as North Carolina. His style evolved throughout his career. Stylistically he began with political cartooning but moved through social realism, cubism, abstraction, until in the late 1950s he settled on collage. Through his collages, he developed a “visual language” where he could present the complexity of black life without clichés and stereotypes. Bearden presented the specifics of black existence that were firmly grounded in universal human truths.
